Why Musical Theater?

Many years ago when teaching a ballet class I put on the turntable “76 Trombones” from Music Man.  The music was perfect for the piqué turns I was teaching and something different from the classical music that is traditionally played in class.  I was shocked when the students did not recognize the music!  The next week I brought in “In the Mood” and continued to bring in music that I had always loved and listened to as a youngster and the result was wonderful.  They too, LOVED the upbeat and interesting lyrics that I was introducing to them and one student asked if the following year if I would consider teaching a class with only musical theater music.

That’s how it all began and with it’s over night popularity, soon I had to hold auditions for the class and now, years later, we have three musical theater groups: Senior Musical Theatre, Junior Musical Theatre, and Magical Musical Theatre (see below).

I disagree with the adage  “American Musical Theatre” is dead.  Not at TDS where the students have learned routines and popular styles of dance from many musicals including:  Man of LaMancha, Sweet Charity, Will Rogers Follies, Fame, Hair, Hair Spray, The Wiz, Mary Poppins, Show Boat, Little Shop of Horrors, George M, Anything Goes, How to Succeed in Business, Starlight Express, Chorus Line.…

In addition to learning and dancing American musicals, the group is run as a choreography class and a club that votes in a president and follows a code of ethics.  Extra rehearsals and performances are also part of the senior profile – and none can imagine their life without dancing.

Chorus Line, a show that was tremendously popular on Broadway for so long and to so many dancers, has remained a staple for the group. The routine “One” which involves some real team work, practice  and precision, remains a traditional routine that is performed by the senior musical theater group almost every year.

Magical Musical Theater:

Is our most junior group and a fun class that involves learning musical theater styles of dance as well as a routine that is performed at the end of the year.  Magical students help out with the younger students at rehearsals and participate in the halloween and Christmas shows.  Auditions are not necessary (please read about our auditions) but students do need to speak to their classroom teacher about possibly being accepted into this class.
